Archie came into care needing more than a routine senior check. Veterinarians found three mast cell tumors, significant dental tartar, and low thyroid levels. All three tumors were surgically removed, and testing confirmed hypothyroidism, so Archie began daily thyroid medication. He was also treated for tapeworms and is now recovering in foster care, where his incisions have healed well.

Although he had initially been listed as 11 years old, his veterinary exam determined that he is closer to 7. Bailey was transferred to Agoura Animal Care Center in March and quickly became known as a fun, silly, social girl who greeted everyone with a smile and a wagging tail. She loved weekly playgroups, enjoyed gentle play with other dogs, walked beautifully on leash, was housebroken, and already knew an impressive list of commands including sit, stay, lay down, play dead, and even balancing a treat on her nose. Her senior medical exam also uncovered ear, eye, and skin infections, a corneal ulcer, allergies, and dental needs that required treatment before she could move on to her next chapter.

Bailey’s perfect match came when a couple searching for a companion for their own rescue dog met her and immediately loved her calm, easygoing temperament. They brought their dog back for an introduction, and Bailey was wonderfully respectful as the two settled comfortably around one another. The family knew she was the right fit, and Bailey was adopted on June 20. She is now happily settled into her new home, surrounded by family, companionship, and all the love this sweet girl waited so patiently to find.

Benji came to Agoura Animal Care Center with a fracture affecting both the radius and ulna in his right front leg. Because it could have required surgery if it did not heal properly, his plan called for careful splinting, repeated X-rays, pain management, and very strict activity restriction. Healing was not always easy: Benji was an energetic young dog who wanted to move, and follow-up imaging showed the fracture had shifted slightly, raising concern it might not heal. He needed repeated bandage changes, sedation for some visits, continued splinting, and close monitoring. With time and patience his leg improved, later X-rays showed better healing, and he stayed on the non-surgical path. Through every appointment his cheerful personality made an impression, and he formed a special bond with one of the people caring for him.

At just 1½ years old, Benni arrived at the shelter feeling run-down. He had a roundworm infection, anemia, and later Giardia. With medication, probiotics, and follow-up testing, he got the treatment he needed and his final test came back clean. Benni has since been adopted, renamed Diamond, and is starting the healthy, happy life those hard days were always leading to.

Blue came to Agoura Animal Care Center with significant pain in his right hind leg and was barely using it. Veterinary evaluation revealed a severe luxating patella and arthritis, and he underwent a complex orthopedic repair. Through surgery, recovery, restricted activity, and weeks of healing, Blue never lost his expressive, people-loving personality.

At 16 years old, Bowie came to Agoura Animal Care Center needing a senior medical check and a little extra care before beginning her next chapter. Her exam found an ear infection and dental disease, while her urinalysis and X-rays were reassuringly normal. Through it all, this little Pug kept her unmistakable personality and quickly charmed everyone around her.

Bowie was adopted by a new mom who could not have been more excited to bring her home. Before adoption, Tamy, Jeremy, and Agoura alum Alexa stepped in to foster her for a few days, surrounding her with comfort and love while she waited. Now this sweet, sassy 16-year-old gets to spend her golden years exactly where she belongs: in a home where she is deeply loved.

Browney came into care with severely irritated, itchy skin that required veterinary treatment and close monitoring. Despite the discomfort, he remained an incredibly sweet, social dog who quickly became loved by the people caring for him.

Browney, now Frankie, was adopted by a family who visited him three times before making it official. Mom, dad, their two daughters, and Grandma all fell in love, and Frankie was wonderful with the girls. He is doing beautifully in his new home, and even his former foster, Taylor, has offered to dog-sit whenever the family needs.

Buster arrived at Agoura Animal Care Center after trauma that had left him with a chronic dislocation of his right hip. By the time he received veterinary care the injury could no longer simply be put back into place: he was limping, uncomfortable, and needed an orthopedic solution. X-rays confirmed the chronic dislocation, and after reviewing his options his team determined a traditional hip replacement was not the best choice because the hip could dislocate again. Instead he underwent a femoral head ostectomy, or FHO, which removes the damaged portion of the joint so the surrounding muscles can build a comfortable, functional one. He recovered under veterinary care and then in foster with HHA board member Tina and her husband, and by his final recheck he had gained weight, could fully extend his leg, showed no signs of pain, and was cleared to exercise without restrictions.

Daisy arrived at Agoura Animal Care Center as a calm, affectionate senior who quickly won everyone over with her sweet nature. Through it all, Daisy was described as an “angel,” calmly riding in the car, cooperating through every appointment, and soaking up affection from everyone she met.

Dakota arrived at Agoura Animal Care Center after being surrendered by her owner. At six years old shelter life was especially difficult for this sensitive Great Dane, but her sweet nature never changed: she leaned into volunteers for affection and became known for her gentle heart and wonderfully silly personality. Her medical journey grew far more complicated when she developed severe gastrointestinal problems, including vomiting, liquid stool, blood in her stool, and significant weight loss. Dakota required hospitalization and extensive testing while her team searched for the cause. Addison’s disease was considered and ruled out, and she later underwent an endoscopy with biopsies. Testing ultimately identified Cryptosporidium along with inflammatory bowel disease, a chronic condition requiring ongoing management, and she was treated with medications and a specialized diet while her team worked to stabilize her.

Her story took a beautiful turn when Dakota was featured as KABC’s Pet of the Week. A couple who had already loved and cared for five Great Danes saw her and immediately felt a connection, and after meeting her they knew she belonged with them. Today Dakota is adopted and exactly where she belongs, with her own twin-size mattress, a yard for zoomies, and a family with years of Great Dane experience who understand just how special she is. Elvis came to Agoura Animal Care Center for a senior wellness evaluation and quickly made an impression with his cheerful personality and famous little hip wiggle. His exam showed moderate dental tartar, and bloodwork revealed an elevated ALP level that raised concern for possible Cushing’s disease. He also developed a mild cough and was treated while additional testing was completed.

Elvis was adopted on April 16 and is now living in a loving home where his big personality can shine. Small but mighty, this sweet boy now gets to spend his days doing what he does best: charming everyone around him and wiggling those hips like the King himself.

Flower spent a very long time in the shelter system and faced one medical challenge after another, including Giardia, a serious respiratory illness that progressed to pneumonia, and weeks of isolation and quarantine while she recovered. Even through prolonged hospitalization, she remained the same happy, playful girl volunteers knew and loved, greeting people with a wagging tail, a big smile, and an endless enthusiasm for life.

After everything Flower endured, and after waiting far too long for someone to choose her, she finally found her forever home. The girl who spent so many days in treatment, quarantine, and a shelter kennel now gets to leave all of that behind and simply be someone’s beloved dog.

Hank returned to County care after being found severely underweight, covered in sores, and suffering from serious skin and ear infections after a period of neglect. He also tested positive for Giardia. With consistent treatment, nutrition, and time, his coat began growing back, his infections cleared, his weight improved, and his confidence returned.

Jake fractured his left forearm and needed months of careful management to give the bone a chance to heal without surgery. His splint repeatedly came off or became compromised, requiring urgent rechecks, repeat splinting, extended hospitalization, medications, and strict activity restriction. Through every setback, Jake remained friendly, playful, resilient, and eager to keep going.

Kahlua came to Agoura Animal Care Center needing treatment for painful dental disease and ear infections. After receiving comprehensive senior medical care, she recovered beautifully and was ready for her next chapter. A wonderful couple looking for a calm, easygoing companion fell in love with her, renamed her Kona, and now say, "She is just wonderful. We love her so much."

Lily arrived at Agoura Animal Care Center as a young German Shepherd after being hit by a car. X-rays showed a fractured pelvis, but with rest, veterinary care, and time her young bones healed beautifully and her goofy, playful personality came right back. During the Los Angeles fires she went into long-term foster care, and soon afterward developed a persistent cough that progressed to lethargy and difficulty breathing. What looked like a respiratory illness became severe pneumonia and a pneumothorax, with air leaking into her chest. Lily needed oxygen, repeated imaging, emergency chest drainage, a CT scan, and specialty hospitalization, and ultimately major surgery to remove two damaged portions of her right lung. Fluid around her lungs had to be drained during recovery, but little by little her breathing improved and her strength returned, with her foster beside her the whole way.

Nani came into County care with multiple mammary masses, worn and broken teeth, and later developed pneumonia. After recovering from the respiratory illness, she underwent major surgery to remove the affected mammary chain. The wonderful news was that her tumors were benign. Through hospitalization, surgery, and recovery, Nani remained incredibly sweet, trusting, and people-oriented.

She is now enjoying cuddles, swapping beds with Graham, and discovering what it feels like to truly belong.

Norman arrived at Agoura Animal Care Center extremely thin, weak, unable to walk normally, and showing serious respiratory symptoms. He was rushed to Malibu Coast Animal Hospital, where X-rays revealed severe pneumonia and bloodwork showed a high white blood cell count. He was hospitalized for intensive care while further testing identified coronavirus and pneumovirus. As his breathing improved he faced another challenge: diarrhea and a positive Giardia test. Even after treatment his gastrointestinal problems persisted, and additional testing later identified Campylobacter, gastrointestinal coronavirus, and another positive Giardia result. With medications, probiotics, a high-fiber prescription diet, and more testing, Norman slowly got stronger until the bright, playful dog underneath all that illness finally shone through.

Healthcare for Homeless Animals funded Norman’s emergency veterinary care, hospitalization for severe pneumonia, diagnostic imaging, bloodwork, respiratory testing, treatment for Giardia and Campylobacter, gastrointestinal testing, medications, probiotics, prescription gastrointestinal food, follow-up veterinary care, and continued medical care throughout his recovery.

Norman’s recovery took persistence. What began as a serious respiratory emergency became months of additional gastrointestinal treatment and testing before he was truly feeling well again. Today Norman is adopted and healthy, filling his home with playful energy, affection, toys, treats, and the happy personality everyone worked so hard to bring back. Pippa was transferred from Palmdale after undergoing both a hind-leg amputation and eye removal. Her recovery became more complicated when an abscess developed at the amputation incision, requiring additional treatment and antibiotic injections. Despite such a difficult start, this young girl kept moving forward through healing, suture removal, and recovery.

Healthcare for Homeless Animals stepped in after Pippa’s surgeries to fund her continued veterinary care, treatment for the infected amputation site, antibiotic injections, follow-up visits, suture removal, medications, and recovery care until she was ready to return to the shelter.

Pippa was adopted on April 16 and is now living in a loving home. We are also incredibly grateful to the fosters who opened their hearts and homes to her during recovery, giving this brave puppy the comfort, patience, and love she needed between the hospital and forever.

Snow came into care with severe chronic eye disease, painful eyelid abnormalities, dental disease, and other senior medical needs. She underwent specialty ophthalmology treatment, surgery, dental care, and months of follow-up while remaining the same affectionate, gentle girl everyone adored.

Healthcare for Homeless Animals funded Snow’s senior medical care, specialty ophthalmology consultations, cryosurgery, dental treatment and extractions, mass removal and biopsy, medications, chronic dry-eye management, and continued veterinary monitoring.

Snow spent years in foster care with Bob, a Healthcare for Homeless Animals board member, surrounded by the comfort, stability, and affection she deserves. Bob fell completely in love with her, and we could not be happier to call this one a foster fail. He adopted her, and Snow is beyond loved in the home she was meant to have all along.

Tender was exposed to parvovirus through his littermate and later tested positive for parvo, Giardia, coronavirus, and Campylobacter. He required immediate treatment and isolation, but even through hospitalization he remained playful, affectionate, curious, and eager to connect with everyone around him.

Tender recovered from an incredibly difficult start and was adopted. The puppy who spent his early months fighting illness now has the chance to grow, play, learn, and experience life as someone’s beloved dog.

At only eight weeks old, Torta became critically ill with aspiration pneumonia, Giardia, Coccidia, unstable blood sugar, dehydration, and gastrointestinal illness. She required intensive treatment and hospitalization, but as she began feeling better, her sweet, wiggly, curious puppy personality came roaring back.

After everything this little puppy fought through, Torta was adopted. Her days of hospital cages, isolation, medications, and recovery are behind her, and she now gets to grow up where every puppy belongs: in a loving home.

Howie came to us as a senior with significant arthritis, muscle loss, dental disease, skin and ear infections, and ongoing pain that needed careful management. Despite everything his body was carrying, he remained an exceptionally gentle, affectionate soul who loved being near his people, taking slow sniff-walks, enjoying treats, and settling into the comforts of home.

Through our Hospice program, Healthcare for Homeless Animals continued funding Howie’s veterinary care, pain management, medications, dental treatment, arthritis care, and ongoing monitoring so his comfort and quality of life could always come first.

Reesa and Justin gave Howie what he needed most: a home. They welcomed him into their family with siblings, soft beds, toys, adventures, laughter, and all the love a dog could ask for. They made his remaining time active, joyful, safe, and full of life while we continued funding his medical needs. Howie has now crossed the rainbow bridge, and our hearts are broken, but we are deeply grateful that his final chapter was not defined by a shelter kennel. It was defined by family, comfort, joy, and love. Run free, sweet Howie. 🌈💙
